   MAR 17 – June, 2020 – Lagos, PT  

We arrived here in Lagos just after Portugal went into lockdown – a State of Emergency. Schools closed and all public spaces were shut down except for essential business such as pharmacies and grocery stores. We found all supplies and items we needed for a very comfortable stay were available.  

We landed a wonderful and spacious flat overlooking the old walled portion of the town and the sea out to the Southeast. Terrific views! And a great place for being here for an unknown amount of time. After the first several weeks here our gracious host converted our rent to a monthly and we’ve been month to month since.

We walk nearly every day and have had no problem finding wonderful produce, eggs, fish, supplies and non-chlorine EU chicken. Our visa status here has been extended from June 30 to Oct 1. We are watching the CV19 numbers in Boston and DC and will likely return to the US sometime in mid- to late July.

Shortly after arriving here we met with our host in her back garden for a brief visit. She asked how we were doing, which was great! I had need of a printer for printing tax stuff and the NYT crossword. None of the print shops were open due to the virus. Just on a whim I asked if she had an old one lying around. Turns out there was one that she couldn’t connect to via wifi and she didn’t have a cable. She brought it buy and I was able to get things connected and put new ink in. It took a few stops to find a store with printer paper but that was it and now have had great access to it ever since.

Subsequent to getting the printer going when it was time to start wearing the required masks I asked if she had a sewing machine!!! She had a very small one that was “broken”. I suggested I might be able to get it going given my luck with the printer. She brought it by and I found it worked fine only it had a compartment for batteries that was empty. I put batteries in before trying anything and it worked fine. It didn’t have a spindle for winding the bobbin but winding by hand is not hard and there’s lots of time at the moment. I’ve made several masks in 2 patterns but found another pattern that looks good so will try that before calling the task completed. In late March there were a handful of DIY Mask web sites; now there are thousands.

On May 4th, Portugal went to a State of Calamity which opened up small stores and allowed restaurants to provide meals via take out. On May 18th restaurants were allowed to serve outside and occasionally inside with limitations on occupancy.   Our neighborhood pizza shopped opened and we have enjoyed terrific pizzas since. The local weekly farmer’s market recently opened as well so we are finding many treats to enjoy.

The weather is now warming up to summer temperatures and beaches are very busy. The water temperature is still chilly – mid to upper 60Fs but may warm enough for us to swim before we leave.

The spare time during this period has been put to good use with lots of naps and many hours of reading. I don’t know that I’ve ever read as much as I do now!!! I’ve read a number of kindle books including the eight books of the Outlander series after being enthralled with the TV series.
