JUNE 4-6, 2018

Time to depart Lagos. We had a lovely chat with our host Carla last night. She and her boyfriend helped us sort an itinerary up the west coast of Portugal to Porto with advice on where to stop and places to see. We rented a car on 4June and decided to stop at Sintra and Peniche. We strayed off the main road to see the rugged coast or catch a restaurant. It was a very good day for a drive.

We stopped at the lighthouse Cabo de Roca on a promontory that is the most western part of continental Europe – quite a place! Spectacular view

Peniche is a coastal town sticking out into the Atlantic. We had a nice hotel room and got great advice on where to have dinner. We walked abit and on the drive out in the morning saw some of the coastline.

We next did a tour of the coast, once again, and arrived in Sintra for the night at what turned out to be a great “room” with booking.com. We were surprised to see a full kitchen and a very comfortable layout. Unfortunately it was too late when we arrived to walk the 20 minutes up to the palace. It’s supposed to be a sight to see, with great views and elaborate architecture. Turns out the fog rolled in during the early evening and we couldn’t see much. In the morning there was dense fog and rain. It seemed pointless to either walk the 20 min, or find the road and drive 40 minute (many hairpin turns) when there was zero visibility. We were anxious to get on to Porto so we left. Maybe we’ll be able to return someday and see the palace.
