We skipped breakfast in order to get going onto the road. We had timed tickets at 1030 for the UNESCO site at Newgrange.
We had no problem with the taxi and getting to the Enterprise desk. I’m glad we sorted it all out yesterday.
Now it was time to “drive on the left”. Google maps got our route out of the city and it turns out most of the roads out are one-way so begin on the wrong side wasn’t an issue.
The 90-minute trip was easy and it was sunny and clear. It was nice to get out into the countryside.
We arrived at the Brú na Bóinne Visitor Centre in time. It’s an interesting place. Apparently it’s one of the most recognized, but one of hundreds, if not thousands of megalithic burial sites dating back to 3200BC, that have been excavated and protected. These are older than the Egyptian pyramids by 500-600 years. The ones here are high mounds with a passage to a burial chamber. The practice then was mostly cremation and remains were brought in and laid in the chambers. Seems it’s been discovered that some remains may have be subsequently removed. Maybe taken “home” for a special place to honor the ancestors if the family had traveled far to the sacred burial mound.

It was about a 2-hour drive to Belfast. I found another parking app so we could get rid of the car for the 2 nights in Belfast. It was at a mall and close to the hotel which was on a pedestrian street. Turns out Saturday nights in Belfast are very loud. Rowdy voices and thumping music. We settled into our room and hoped for the best.
Advice to anyone headed to Belfast on a Friday or Saturday night, if you are staying on any of the busy, pedestrian only streets, it’s likely your hotel or the pub next door will make lots of very loud music until very late.
After checking in we went on a bit of a walk to look around and found a quiet French restaurant not in the noisy area, about 2 blocks from our hotel. It was a terrific meal, once again.
